National Tactical Officers Association South Carolina Crisis Negotiators Association The Laurens County Special Operations Repsonse Team (S.O.R.T.) is comprised of a diverse group of law enforcement professionals. Team members are assigned to various units within the Sheriff’s Office and are on a 24/7 call out basis. The Laurens County Sheriff's Office S.O.R.T. responds to some of the county's most dangerous and potentially volatile law enforcement situations. The team is responsible for handling various incidents: barricaded subjects and hostage-taking situations, search/arrest warrant operations, and other tactical operations. S.O.R.T. also works with  local municipal police agencies when called upon for tactical operations and works closely with the Narcotics Unit in addressing street level drug enforcement and arrests. The team also addresses criminal trends, focusing enforcement efforts in areas that require additional enforcement attention. Laurens County Sheriff's Office S.O.R.T. also has a compliment of a certified tactical medic professional on the team. The tactical medic accompanies team members into the field providing immediate medical care to team members, citizens and suspects who are in forward areas inaccessible to medical response.  Annually, team members must pass screening, a stringent physical standard, and proficiency with specialized weapons. The team trains bi-monthly in the use of tactics, weapons systems, physical fitness and specialty vehicles and equipment. Team members are highly trained and skilled in the use of sidearms, shoulder fired long-range weapons, specialty impact weapons, chemical agents and electronic control weapons. Assignment to S.O.R.T. is strictly volunteer and is not a paid position. Each member of the S.O.R.T. takes great pride in protecting our community and the lives of our citizens.
